Sanjay Basu

Dr. Sanjay Basu is a Co-Founder and the Head of Clinical at Waymark, a public benefit organization providing community-based, data-science-driven care for people receiving Medicaid. Waymark trains and deploys teams of pharmacists, social workers, and community health workers to improve care access and quality, using rigorously-tested protocols, in partnership with primary care providers.

Prior to their current role, Dr. Basu was with HealthRIGHT 360 for 3 years, providing comprehensive primary care with a focus on unhoused people, including integrated behavioral health, substance use treatment, and HIV/HepC treatment. Sanjay also provided mobile door-to-door service in COVID-19 quarantine shelters. Before that, they spent 7 years at Harvard University as the Director of Research for the Center for Primary Care and also on faculty at the Center for Primary Care. While at Harvard, they studied value-based care services, primary care workforce development, and population outcomes from addressing social determinants of health. Sanjay also derived and validated simulation models to assist primary care practices to plan for workforce and service delivery changes including integrated behavioral healthcare, proactive chronic care management, capitated payments, and COVID vaccination.

Most recently, Dr. Basu was the Vice President of Research and Population Health at Collective Health for 2 years. In this role, they were responsible for leading research initiatives and population health strategies across the company.

Dr. Basu is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and Stanford University.

Sanjay Basu graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in Brain & Cognitive Science in 2002. Sanjay then went on to get their MSc in Medical Anthropology from the University of Oxford in 2003. From 2003 to 2009, they attended Yale University for their MD and PhD in Public Health. Sanjay completed their residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco in 2012. Sanjay is an inducted member of The American Society for Clinical Investigation and is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
