Michael Tonke has a diverse work experience in the engineering and construction industry. Michael worked as the Technical Head Baugeräteservice (Mechanical Department) at Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG from March 2019. Prior to that, they served as the Technical Head of STRABAG Mechanical Department Tunnelling at STRABAG from January 2016 to February 2019. Before that, they were the Head of Competence Center for Tunnelling at BMTI Baumaschinentechnik International Gmbh & Co. KG from January 2014 to December 2015, and the Technical Head BMTI Skandinavien from November 2011 to August 2015. Michael started their career at Bilfinger Berger Civil, Mechanical Department in June 2003 and worked there as the Business Unit Manager Conventional Tunnelling until October 2011.

Michael Tonke completed their education with a focus on engineering and computer science. Michael first attended the Betriebsberufsschule der SDAG WISMUT in Schlema/Sachsen from 1984 to 1987, where they obtained a degree as an Instandhaltungsmechaniker mit Abitur. Following this, they studied at TU Bergakademie Freiberg / Freiberg University of Mining and Technology from 1989 to 1994, earning a Graduate Engineer degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Mining Machines. Michael then pursued further studies at the Colorado School of Mines from 1994 to 1995, where they were awarded a FULBRIGHT Scholarship for Postgraduates in the field of Computer Science and Engineering.
