Yali Xue is a staff scientist at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute since February 2004, where initial research focused on Y-chromosomal diversity and participation in the Genographic project, later shifting towards identifying signatures of positive selection in the human genome. Prior to this role, Yali Xue served as a lecturer, reader, and professor in the Department of Medical Genetics at Harbin Medical University in China from September 1996 to February 2004, concentrating on lecturing in medical genetics and conducting research on the population genetics of difficult ethnic groups in China.
