Senior Hardware Engineer, Reliability Lead at Wing

Christian Nielsen has a diverse work experience that spans over several years. Christian started their career as a Mechanical Engineering Intern at Lockheed Martin, where they conducted research on lightweight flexible composites for aerospace structures. Christian also drafted a technical paper on upper atmospheric lightning.

After their internship, Christian worked at UC San Diego where they held multiple roles, including Teaching Assistant and Graduate Student Researcher. During this time, they also served as a Postdoctoral Researcher.

Christian's next role was at Google, specifically at Titan Aerospace, where they worked as a Mechanical Engineer. Christian was involved in the mechanical design, fabrication, and validation of hardware components for a high altitude unmanned aircraft prototype. Christian also led structural proof testing and evaluated materials for future aircraft designs.

Following their time at Google, Christian joined X, the moonshot factory, as a Senior Mechanical Engineer for Project Wing. Christian held this role for about three years, contributing to the project's development.

Currently, Christian works at Wing as a Senior Hardware Engineer and Reliability Lead, a position they have held since 2018.

Christian Nielsen earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Applied Mechanics from UC San Diego from 2008 to 2012. Prior to that, they obtained a Master's Degree in Applied Mechanics from the same university, studying from 2006 to 2008. Christian completed their undergraduate education at Case Western Reserve University, where they earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from 2001 to 2006.
