Johan Bergenas

As the lead for WWF-US’ oceans programs, Johan works closely with WWF’s partners to advance the oceans agenda in the US and globally. Previously with Waxman Strategies, he worked with institutions to launch initiatives that advance ocean energy solutions, mitigate illegal and unregulated fishing practices, and improve ocean satellite monitoring. He previously served both Jody Allen and Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder, and their organization Vulcan Inc. based in Seattle. At Vulcan Johan worked with international teams on five continents to develop and launch science and technology-oriented conservation programs, especially focused on managing and enforcing rules in marine protected areas, combatting IUU fishing, and addressing broader maritime issues. Prior to joining Vulcan, Johan co-founded and led a technology start-up focused on conservation. Together with a team of public, private, and community stakeholders in Kenya, Sweden, the UK, and the US he conceived and managed a rhino conservation initiative in Tsavo West National Park. The innovation aimed to digitalize and integrate the workflow of the rangers, commanders, scientists, and park leadership to enable communications and develop strategic conservation and security insights in real time. Johan became a U.S. citizen last year but was born and raised in Sweden. Johan holds a master’s degree from Georgetown University and lives in Washington, DC with his wife, Elena, and 3.5-year-old son, Noah, and two rescue cats from the streets of Abu Dhabi.
