Brian Carnes has over 25 years of experience in various roles, starting in 1997 as a Systems Software Engineer at Green Hills Software. Brian then worked at the International Computer Science Institute as a Game Theory Researcher, where they developed a combinatorial game theory analysis package for the game of Go.
In 2004, Carnes joined Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a Graduate Researcher in Bioinformatics, where they developed multi-force electrostatics models and implemented parallel protein folding optimization techniques.
Brian then joined eBay in 2007, where they served as the Senior Manager, Applied Research, Trust Sciences, and later as the Manager, Applied Research, Trust and Safety. During their time at eBay, they were responsible for developing machine learning solutions for fraud detection and predictive trust factors, applying techniques such as text mining and natural language processing.
Carnes moved on to Google [x] - Project Loon in 2013, where they held the roles of Staff Software Engineer and later Senior Staff Software Engineer. Brian then joined Verily Life Sciences in 2016 as the Director of Software Engineering for Verb Surgical. In 2018, they became the Head of Connected Devices, Security, and Surgical Systems at Verily Life Sciences.
In 2020, Carnes joined Lyft Level 5 as a Principal Engineer, working on autonomous vehicle technology. Brian then transitioned to Woven Planet in 2021, where they became the Director. In 2022, they were promoted to the role of Senior Director, Platform, Tools & Infrastructure at Woven Planet.
Brian Carnes attended Tamalpais High School, although the specific years are unknown. After graduating high school, they went on to study at Harvey Mudd College from 1993 to 1997. At Harvey Mudd, they pursued a double major in Computer Science and Mathematics, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. Following this, Brian furthered their education at the University of California, Berkeley, where they obtained a Master of Science degree in Bioengineering (Computational Biology) from 2003 to 2007.
