Ryan Shirley

Ryan Shirley has diverse work experience in the field of data engineering and architecture. Ryan is currently working at Fractal as a Data Engineering Technical Lead, where they provide consulting services to large enterprise clients on data warehousing projects. Ryan'sresponsibilities include designing and developing ETL pipelines using Azure Synapse, Databricks, and Azure Data Factory, as well as creating star schema data models.

Prior to Fractal, Ryan founded ZipScripts in 2021, where they played multiple roles, including product design, architecture, development, sales, and marketing. ZipScripts focuses on modernizing how patients interact with independent pharmacies.

From 2018 to 2022, Ryan worked at ATB Financial as a Big Data Architect. In this role, they were responsible for designing Big Data solutions using Google Cloud Platform, specifically focusing on data ingestion into BigQuery using Apache Beam and Apache Airflow. Ryan also played a key role in the transition from an on-premise relational data warehouse to a cloud-based Data Lake.

Before ATB Financial, Ryan worked at Alberta Health Services from 2012 to 2018 as a Solution Architect. Ryan was involved in the architecture of Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing solutions, with a particular highlight being the Solution Architect for the Emergency Medical Services provincial data warehouse.

Prior to that, Ryan worked at Ideaca (now Hitachi Solutions) as a Solution Architect and Senior Consultant. In both roles, they provided architecture, design, and development services for Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing projects. Ryan had expertise in SQL Server, Business Objects, Sybase, and Oracle platforms.

Ryan's work experience also includes positions at Alberta Cancer Board as a Senior Programmer/Analyst, where they led Business Intelligence development, and at Canadian Pacific Railway as a Technician, where they deployed Windows infrastructure.

Ryan started their career as a Research Assistant at the University of Calgary, where they conducted research on the Quantum Fourier Transform and authored a technical report.
