John McGonigle

John McGonigle has a diverse work experience in the field of bioinformatics and data science. John is currently working as the Director of Bioinformatics at Adrestia Therapeutics since 2022. Prior to that, they held various roles at Horizon Discovery, including Bioinformatics Manager, Senior Bioinformatics Scientist, and Bioinformatics Scientist I. During their time at Horizon Discovery, they played a crucial role in the planning, development, and maintenance of bioinformatics tools and pipelines for the analysis of biological and genetic data.

Before joining Horizon Discovery, John worked as a Bioinformatician Scientist at Repositive, where they led a project to centralize multiple pipelines for NGS data analysis. John also provided a containerized environment for running bioinformatic pipelines and maintained production-level pipelines.

John's work experience also includes roles at Congenica as a Data Scientist, where they designed methods for the validation and verification of DNA sequence analysis pipelines. John was also involved in variant prioritization algorithms and research-level software development projects.

John started their career as a Data Engineer at ITO World, where they were responsible for designing and implementing novel algorithms for complex problem solving. John also gained experience in web scraping and data synthesis.

John's academic background includes a Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Cambridge, where they investigated the genetic regions responsible for producing variation in host resistance. Additionally, they worked as a Field Course Manager and NST1A & NST1B Supervisor, teaching and mentoring undergraduates in areas of evolutionary biology and quantitative genetics.

Prior to their Ph.D., John gained research experience through internships and studentships at the British Ecological Society and the University of Sheffield, where they worked on projects related to food security and antimicrobial development.

John McGonigle began their education in 2006 at Blue Coats School in Coventry, where they pursued A levels in Economics, Biology, and Chemistry. After completing their A levels in 2008, they enrolled at The University of Sheffield and earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Biology, which they completed in 2011. Following this, John continued their education at The University of Sheffield and obtained a Master's degree in Insect Immunology (MBiolSci) in 2012. Finally, they attended the University of Cambridge from 2012 to 2016, where they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Disease Genetics.
