Research Program Manager

The Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) is an exciting and growing research institute, addressing critical challenges facing the health of our oceans as well as using the ocean’s unique resources to address human health through innovative scientific research and education. GMGI is looking for a dynamic, organized, and experienced individual to serve as our Research Program Manager. As a member of our Research Team, you will help guide our research programs and oversee laboratory operations to ensure the highest level of efficiency, productivity, and impact aligned with our mission.

The ideal candidate will have strong leadership and organization skills, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills to thrive in a collaborative and dynamic work environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement program management systems that support the execution and growth of our research program
  • Review progress of research projects and track milestones and deliverables in the context of budgets, deadlines, and strategic objectives
  • Manage budgets for active and planned projects
  • Ensure laboratory spending aligns with budgets established as part of program management
  • Document project status and results in a way that can be easily viewed by stakeholders and conveyed to institute leadership
  • Align project teams to ensure a consistent level of governance and standards across multiple projects
  • Identify and triage risks as they arise.
  • Oversee laboratory operations and safety of GMGI’s research facility
  • Help plan laboratory space and needed equipment to support the growth of GMGI’s research
  • Supervise an Assistant Laboratory Manager whose day-to-day tasks include to maintain supplies and inventory, place and receive orders, ensure equipment service contracts are up-to-date and schedule equipment maintenance and repairs, schedule removal of biological and hazardous waste.
  • Oversee lab safety procedures to comply with local, state and federal regulations and ensure personnel are trained according to these standards
  • Lead the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and act as the liaison between GMGI and the Gloucester Board of Health
  • Lead efforts to establish the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
  • Identify opportunities to increase efficiency and sustainability of the lab environment

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Marine Science, or related field

  • 3+ years relevant program management work experience successfully supporting research projects

  • Experience managing federally funded research (e.g., NSF, NOAA, NIH, USDA, etc)

  • Knowledge of good laboratory practice and safety through lab operations experience

  • Knowledge of IBC and IACUC guidelines and regulations

  • Highly organized and detail oriented; ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent communication skills across a variety of stakeholders in multiple formats

  • Strong computer skills, especially in MS Office suite products, and the ability to learn new programs/systems

  • Independent, creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills

  • Excellent teamwork skills for success in a collaborative and dynamic environment

This position reports to the CSO.

Salary commensurate with experience.
