Erik Voogd has a diverse and extensive work experience spanning multiple industries and roles. Erik began their career as a Nuclear Machinist Mate on the U.S.S. Texas CGN-39 from 1989 to 1992. Erik then served as a Flight Surgeon in the United States Marine Corps, providing medical support during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and later participating in relief efforts in Sumatra, Indonesia. Erik continued their service in the Marine Corps until 2007, holding various positions including Surgeon for Marine Air Group 11 & 16 and 3rd Marine Air Wing (Rear), supervising a team of 45 Officers and 239 Enlisted personnel.
Following their military service, Erik transitioned to the medical field, starting as a Staff Anesthesiologist and Interventional Pain Medicine Physician at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth from 2011 to 2014. Erik then moved to Naval Medical Center San Diego, where they served as a Staff Anesthesiologist and Interventional Pain Medicine Physician from 2014 to 2016. During this time, they also assumed the role of Director of the Pain Clinic at Naval Medical Center San Diego from 2014 to 2016.
In 2012, Erik joined the faculty of USUHS as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, where they worked until 2017. Erik then joined Great Lakes Pain Center as the Director in 2016.
Throughout their career, Erik has also contributed their expertise outside of their primary roles. In 2014, they worked as a Medical Doctor at HealthTap, providing online pro bono medical advice to those in need.

Dr. Erik Voogd has a diverse education history. Erik completed a Pain Medicine Fellowship at Uniformed Services University from 2011 to 2012. Prior to this, they undertook an Anesthesiology Residency Program at the same institution from 2007 to 2010. Dr. Voogd holds a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Uniformed Services University, which they earned between 1997 and 2001. Erik began their collegiate journey at the University of Arizona, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Cell/Cellular and Molecular Biology from 1993 to 1997. Their high school education was received at Parkersburg High School. In terms of additional certifications, Dr. Voogd has earned a certification in Pain Medicine from the American Board of Medical Specialties, expected in 2022, and a certification in Anesthesiology from The American Board of Anesthesiology, obtained in December 2021.
