Michael McCarter

Managing Editor/Standards, Ethics and Inclusion at USA Today

Michael McCarter is the current Managing Editor/Standards, Ethics and Inclusion at USA Today. Prior to this, they worked as an Adjunct Professor at Clark Atlanta University, Digital Photo Manager at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and Assistant Photo Editor at The Times.

McCarter has always had a passion for photography and photojournalism. Michael got their start in the industry in 1994 when they became the Assistant Photo Editor at The Times. In 1998, they transitioned to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as their Digital Photo Manager. In this role, they were responsible for identifying visual opportunities for optimal web presentation and directly supervised staff photographers. Michael also coordinated assignments for the staff photographers, planned and managed visuals for the Sunday front page, and evaluated and measured content to ensure proper audience engagement.

In 2004, McCarter left the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to become an Adjunct Professor at Clark Atlanta University where they taught junior and senior level Photography and Photoshop courses. Michael also advised and mentored students interested in photography and photojournalism. Michael remained in this role until 2005 when they transitioned to their current position at USA Today.

At USA Today, McCarter is responsible for managing standards, ethics, and inclusion. Michael works to ensure that the company upholds its ethical standards and that its reporting is fair and accurate. Michael also works to promote diversity and inclusion within the company and its news coverage.

Michael McCarter's educational career consists of a Bachelor of Science in Photojournalism from The University of Southern Mississippi and a degree in Psychology from LSU Shreveport.
